HOW DOES ETHICLE WORK ?

Ethicle works exactly as the biggest search engines and provides results as relevant and as quick as them. Its only difference is that evrery 100 researches, Ethicle funds the planting of a tree.

WHY PLANT A TREE ?

Trees have a dual function: economic and ecological.

The ecological role

Aside from oxygen production (through photosynthesis) which is indispensable to our lives, the forest contributes to plant and animal species maintenance, regulation of the water cycle, soil protection, and major natural and climatic equilibriums.

Climate equilibrium and carbon storage :

On the local scale, the set of stratum (herbaceous, shrubs, canopies…) that make up the forest provide real stabilization of the local climate, a powerful buffer between exterior climate variations. At the global level, forests allow the sequestering of carbon in the vegetal biomass and then in the soil, thus reducing the greenhouse gas level in the atmosphere (much carbon dioxide - CO2) thereby decreasing global warming.

Protection of soils and regulation fresh water :
Organic material, coming from biodegradation, plays a beneficial role in soil structure stabilization. The presence of a dense root structure and a stratum of humus increase the capacity to retain water. The forest cover reduces streaming and fluctuations in river flow. In facilitating water infiltration in the soil, forests also contribute in filtering pollutants and supplying quality, stable ground water.

Conservation of ecosystems :
Currently 1.5 million animal and vegetable species are scientifically recorded. According to conservative estimates, the number of total species is between 3 and 10 million. One of the most remarkable characteristics of forests, notably tropical forests, is their enormous biodiversity. It is presumed that of the total number of species living on the ground, 50 to 75% originate from humid tropical forests. The imprecision of these estimations is due to the uncertainty regarding the present number of species.

The economic role

Wood energy :
For the majority of the local inhabitants of tropical regions, wood and carbon are most often the only economically accessible and culturally acceptable energy sources. For the year 1995, the FAO estimated approximately 1.9 billion meters cubed for world firewood consumption. In this report, the part of tropical countries was more than 70% at 1.3 billion meters cubed. To certain observers, this means that the supplying of wood energy is the major function of tropical forests.

Timber :
At the beginning of the 90's, 80% of the annual usage of tropical forests was for energy needs. The fabrication of paper and cardboard remains marginal or very localized, we can consider that less than 20% is used for wood work and industry. These are materials for the making of saws, veneering and plywood, then useful for woodworking and construction. In regards to the only world-wide timber production, assessed for the same period to be 1.6 million meters cubed, the contribution from tropical countries can be estimated to be around 20%.

Non-wood production :
Beyond the wood production that it provides and the ground reservation it constitutes, forests are the source of a large range of products, known as non-ligneous products, including fruits, rubber, resin, bark, oils, woodfibre, medicinal substances, dyes, game… the usage of this resource is age-old. We can be sure that many of these sectors of production were, long before the wood, a motivation for exploration in tropical forests and the object of lucrative international commerce led by merchants and colonizing countries.
